China is home to many famous mountains that are deeply rooted in both Buddhism and Taoism, but none compare to Zhongnan Mountain in terms of its historical significance to Chinese religion. Despite not being widely known as a destination for either religion, Zhongnan Mountain holds an unparalleled position as the birthplace of Taoism in China as well as the site where Buddhism first put down roots in the country. It was here that early Buddhist teachings received an open-minded welcome, and where the religion was able to take hold and flourish. As such, understanding the history of Chinese Buddhism and Taoism without a visit to Zhongnan Mountain is incomplete at best and impossible at worst. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the rich cultural history of Chinese religion.
